Today is International Day for Biological Diversity, and we want to use this time to highlight a key ecosystem player in the Midwest ecology: the bur oak! This year, the theme is "Acting Locally for Global Impact," so we'll tell you all about how important bur oaks are locally and how you can get involved!
Bur oaks are great measures for biodiversity! Over 500 species of moths and butterflies alone can live on a bur oak, and support other wildlife. Bur oaks have been prevalent in Chicago since the 1830s and represent how much they have dominated our landscape even before settlers arrived. Today, bur oaks can be found all over the country but are heavily concentrated in the Midwest, showcasing how well they thrive in Chicago.
Interested in learning more and getting involved? There are lots of ways to get out in our local nature areas! Become a docent at the Lily Pool or the Conservatory or work at North Pond at an EcoSteward workday!

Happy #WildflowerFriday! This week's wildflower is the Virginia waterleaf!
✏️ Latin: Hydrophyllum virginianum
🌸 The blossoms may be white, pink, pale blue, or light purple.
🍃 The leaves are a deep green with splashes of white that look like water stains—hence the name.
🥗 Also historically known as "Shawnee salad" or "John's cabbage", the young leaves, shoots, and unopened flower buds are edible.

We have had a striking visitor at North Pond! This is a Snowy Egret, known to wade in shallow water and spear fish to hunt. These birds are not common additions to our fauna, so we hope our bird-lovers will have a chance to see him!

OPEN CALL: in celebration of Florasonic’s 25th anniversary, ESS is seeking proposals for four-channel sound compositions created for installation in the Lincoln Park Conservatory Fern Room.
One of the only ongoing sound installation programs in the U.S., Florasonic has commissioned 47 original works since 2001.
Proposed projects should showcase the unique potential of multichannel sound in this highly public context, demonstrating consideration for the location, which serves as a sanctuary and space of meditative calm and wonder for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The selected installation will run from Sunday, August 23-October 11, 2026.
Proposals are due Sunday, June 14, 2026 by midnight. Application and further details linked in bio.
Florasonic is developed by Experimental Sound Studio and is presented in partnership with the Lincoln Park Conservatory. This year’s program is supported by the Paul M. Angell Foundation.

Happy #WorldBeeDay! This international holiday serves to acknowledge the role and importance of bees in ecosystems worldwide.
This day was chosen as it was the birthday of beekeeping pioneer, Anton Janša!
Fun fact about bees:
Honey bees cannot see red light but can see ultraviolet light. This enables them to see intricate ultraviolet light patterns on flower petals that humans cannot see!

Happy #WildflowerFriday! This week's wildflower is the Marsh Marigold!
✏️ Latin: Caltha palustris
🚪 On the Isle of Man, it was considered a good omen, and the flowers, known as 'Mayflowers', were strewn on doorsteps.
💧 Its scientific name, palustris, is Latin for “of a marsh” and is often found in wet forests, near springs, and marshes.
🌼 While beautiful and has some medicinal uses, it can cause skin irritation.
