A moment of gratitude (and failure)

I recently posted about celebrating 5 years clean and sober. A success of sorts. But i want to remind myself that the whole story is more nuanced than that. Life in its wholeness ebbs and flows. We inhale and exhale. Trees don’t bear fruit every day all year round. Sometimes they are barren. Sometimes all of the leaves fall off. And that’s not only ok, it’s necessary.

I first got sober years ago and I stayed sober for a little over 3 years. I relapsed in 2019. I finally managed to stay stopped on May 14th 2021. That was the last time I used any mind altering substance. Which tells me that I spent about a year and a half failing. Failing miserably, over and over again. Letting everyone down. Being a person I hated. Losing everything. Oh I tried. I tried so damn hard - it wasn’t for lack of effort. I just couldn’t get it right. I gave up many times. Honestly? I had no hope. I didn’t think I’d ever get it done. But for some reason, maybe being the glutton for punishment I was, I kept going.

All this to say, these last few years have been filled with disappointments and failures. But I’m well acquainted with them. And I don’t like how they feel, but I’m ok with them. And the successes I am very grateful for. I’m grateful to be a part of a community of people in recovery who share many failures and successes. I am them and they are me.

So if you’re failing right now, fail. Fail again. Fail better.

It’s been 10 years this month since the release of my video for Build A Kingdom by @iamsimonpipe. It was just the two of us on a whim down Cattlewash, a very simple thought, with a single take and a single shot on my iPhone, and edited the same day.

We went on to win Best Music Video 2016 at the Barbados Visual Media Awards. Hardly anybody has seen the video, so I’m resharing it! It’s not perfect but it was magic and the time has gone pretty fast.
