John Darnielle of @mountaingoatsmusic is one of the most prolific songwriters working in modern indie rock. Hot on the heels of 2025’s Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan, The Mountain Goats have announced their 24th album, simply titled Days, out August 7th, 2026 on Darnielle’s own Cadmean Dawn Records.
Packed with ‘90s-evoking song titles like “Song for Layne Staley,” “Candlebox,” and “Woodstock ‘99,” Days, to quote Darnielle, “began life as Grunges, a sequel” to the Mountain Goats 2017’s album Goths, which was inspired by the ‘80s heyday of artists The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Joy Division.
But in typical Mountain Goats fashion, things quickly evolved and the album took a new direction, with Darnielle noting: “These songs are loosely about the 70s, 80s, and 90s, which is to say they’re about the accumulation of days, each one a little further back than the next, sometimes miraculously seeming clearer as they recede and sometimes blurring into unrecognizable shapes which are sometimes pleasant and sometimes troubling.”
The album’s first single is the evocatively titled “Charlie Sheen Reaches Out the The Feds,” a minimalist and driving rock song about the time the Hot Shots! actor, in the midst of a coke binge, became convinced he’d seen an actual murder after watching a bootleg tape of the Japanese horror movie Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood—and reached out to the FBI, prompting an investigation.
Produced by John Congleton at Sear Sound in NYC, the album features guest contributions from songwriter Matt Nathanson and Janis Siegal of the vocal group Manhattan Transfer.
