Just a Tommy Gun appreciation post 💚 Without this guy in my life I truly have no idea what kind of teammate or person I’d be…luckily I never have to imagine that. Tommy has taught me to always shoot for my best and enjoy every jam as much as we can. The bench yaps, vents, and fart jokes keep me going. Seeing us only get better?? Insane. No matter the jersey color or team we are locked in. You’ve been my derby role model for forever and getting to block with you is an absolute dream. YOU set the standard for blockers everywhere. Calling you one of my best friends is just a bonus prize. Love you bro, glad we got some wholesome pics this year 💚 One day I’ll lay out the Tommy Gun hits just like you’ve taught me 🔥💯 Until that day I’m right next to you- jammers dying on our backs for all eternity 💚☠️

I’ve spent the past week reflecting on my trip to Charleston SC with Black Derby Collective to Dumpster Fire and I’m finally ready to post and share some photo memories. You gonna bear with me cause there’s lots of emotion here 💜 This trip was easily one of the most influential trips I have ever taken. Playing with BDC is an overwhelming feeling of validation, accomplishment, and black joy. I live in Oregon, was raised by my white mama, and grew up where my blackest memories weren’t filled with love. My father never celebrated his blackness- instead he hid from it. My memories as a young child in Oregon consist of being called slurs and getting my hair pulled… not much else. My experience being a light skinned black woman in roller derby (especially in MRDA- my true derby love) consists of fighting and performing to be seen in dominated white spaces ALWAYS… but not when I play with Black Derby Collective. 💜 I’ve never felt more professional as a skater and Captain representing my teammates and coaches to the best of my ability. I’ve never felt so validated after getting that MVB award after our Riptide game, I literally couldn’t stop crying. Suddenly nobody else’s opinion mattered except for my team on the bench, and my coaches checking in and communicating with me. I felt so connected to my team that I’ve really struggled with my emotions back home and I’m missing and craving my community. I know that I’ll be back playing with BDC as soon as I can but it doesn’t feel soon enough. To my team @blackderbycollective THANK YOU! Thank you for filling my soul with incredible black joy, excellence, and simply black existence- because we deserve it. I love and cherish what we are creating. BY US FOR US 💜🔥
(Can you BELIEVE I’d never had collard greens before this trip? 😭) THANK YOU @threadsweatntears @black_derby_collective @187quad could never do it without you 💜
