Do you ever look at a river and think, “there’s no way there’s a fish in there?”

Max took one look at this little stretch in Ohio and basically said, “we’re seriously fishing this ditch?” Expectations were low… right up until a steelhead came cartwheeling out of the water and changed the entire mood in seconds. That’s steelhead fishing. You can spend hours doubting the water, your flies, and your life choices, then one fish eats and suddenly none of it matters anymore.

These aren’t your typical steelhead conditions… but then again, these aren’t your typical steelhead.
~
Big flies and heavy setups weren’t going to fool these fish. With help from the crew at @madriveroutfitters, we downsized to a small dry fly and subtle nymph rig to match the conditions, and eventually convince one picky steelhead to eat. Sometimes the difference between watching and hooking up comes down to slowing down, making adjustments, and trusting the process.

“I wanted to tie a match the hatch style squid fly with wings that imitate a real squid. I named this fly the Love Machine because when put in front of a fish they can’t resist. This particular trip i was able to test it out on redfish from the skiff and by foot in the surf. It doesn’t take much stripping of the fly line to get the wings moving. With a constant under arm strip the fly tracks in a straight line with wings fluttering but if stripped normal it will dart back and forth“
