I have been waiting, hibernating, while my body adjusts its relationship with my new ankle. They are still sussing each other out, and not entirely happy. However, life speeds on and I’ve gotta get back to work, out here in the world.I am so grateful to everybody who collaborates with me to make these events happen.

April 20-May 22nd : leading a 5 week module ‘Investigative Practice’, MA/MFA in Creative Practice, at Siobhan Davies Studios. With Kathy Krick
I teach two open classes as part of this module: May 20th & 21st, 10am-12 midday. All welcome. @_independentdance

June 4th – June 7th : performing with Sweatmother in ‘Dyke Just Do It’, at Glasgow International Festival, and leading a workshop at the Tramway. @sweatmother @gifestival

June 11th : I head north again to facilitate ‘Letting Go of Things’ a workshop at Northern School of Contemporary Dance. @northern_school

June15th-June 19th : leading a week-long ‘Cruising and Performance’ workshop, at Studio in Peckham, managed by Future Ritual and assisted by Zak Mennell @futureritual @studio.futureritual

July 8th-July 12th : leading another week-long ‘Cruising and Performance’ workshop at Studio in Peckham, managed by Future Ritual, assisted by Zack Mennell. @zackmennell
There may still be some places left on this one. Check on Future Ritual site.

July 20th – July 24th : Choreodrome residency, a week of research with transdisciplinary artist Fritha Jenkins. @frithajenkins A starting point for a year-long artistic project that’s about wrinkling time, andincludes re-inventing archive materials in film, stories and movement, a series of salon-style performances, a reworking of The Trembling Forest and a load of workshops (ACE funding pending).

I have a chapter published called ‘HOMECOMING’ in Contemporary Choreography (2026), eds. Jo Buttterworth & Vicky Hunter London Routledge @jo.butterworth.75 @vickyhunter6

This was posted on someone’s Instagram and someone else sent it to me on WhatsApp. This is a snippet of me in 1997 or so playing with gender qualities across the androgynous arc in a piece called Did I Speak. Music Sylvia Hallet. Not sure what it’s got to do with punk or how it found itself on insta gram… thanks whoever found it ….

Dates added! ROUND 2 - 8-12 July. Link in bio!

cruising and performance: power, pleasure, gender 🔥

Facilitated by emilyn claid, this 5 day intensive workshop looks at the physicalities of power, pleasure, seduction, ambiguity, cool, desire, femininity, masculinity and androgyny.

Rooted in @emilynclaid's extensive experience of choreography and performance, we'll explore cruising as relational presence and the performance of seduction.

This is for those who want to move and perform, who want to play with gender and experiment with embodied expressions of power and pleasure, and who embrace queerness as a practice.

Peckham (London), £300/£250. Tickets available now (link in bio) - registration deadline 1 May (but probably it will fill up before then!). Payment plans available.

Lying on my back on the floor with my legs up on the bed, jiggling about and keeping my leg elevated - doctors’ essential advice. thisIKEA sofa bed has supported me with sleeping, reading, writing stories about my dad, eating, watching TV, listening to radio, entertaining and being entertained by friends and family, playing scrabble and cards, (on this bed and online), exercising and studying my beginners guide to learning Spanish guitar. I get up now and again, hop to the loo with my zimmer frame, make a cup of tea. Not quite ready to think into future artistic projects …
Choreographing with one leg is a constant creative curiosity and a glance at the frustrations of disability. I am grateful it is temporary.
I have another 5 days of this before I magically get myself to Kings to get the cast off and enter the next stage of recovery. Can’t wait!
Thankyou to friends and family who come here with oranges, who cook, wash up, fill the kettle upstairs, empty the bins, vacuum, chat, play games and watch films with me. And who are also sensitive to know when I have had enough socialising.
Although too early to know the success of this surgery, I am grateful to the surgeon Mr Shah and his colleagues at Kings Hospital, Orpington Hospital, and all who work on the Boddington Ward. I felt I was in safe and skilful hands.
Thankyou @kingscollegehospital @orpington hospital @heidirustgaard @ulrikesteven @j.neve.harrington @lola.upload @sweatmother @lucyadam8 @gracebnicol @jo_leask @szczels @lucy_in_bc

Image one. Wednesday morning. Bye bye dear old ankle thanks for doing your best all these years. Sorry it’s time to go.
Image two. Wednesday evening. Hello Stryker Infinity you dashing new sprightly young prince of an ankle. Look at you all cocooned in your cosy cast. Hang in there through the tough times in your new environment. And dear foot please welcome him. We’ll all get to know each other… yes I’m woozy on drugs…

I want to bring this here, because it feels like a momentous next event in my life. I guess I want it witnessed! So thankyou.
The 1st image is an Xray of my left foot – which is deformed with osteoarthritis. Next week I am having a TAR – Total Ankle Replacement.
I have lived, walked, danced and performed with osteoarthritis in my left foot since I was 11 years of age. I am now 76. I remember the first day clearly, in the studio dancing, when I first felt the pain. At the age of 37 it travelled from my toe to ankle. I ignored the pain and stiffness, I carried on. On reflection however, I can see how the osteoarthritis has influenced many of my life choices …
2nd image (photographer @henritartist Deciding to ‘come home’ to performing in 2021 was with full knowledge that I would be performing in pain. I decided not to keep silent about it any longer. With the solo show Untitled (2021-25), I brought the pain, and the shame, into the work with clay, (thanks to @florence_peake

Two years ago, I began to research medical help having tried all the alternative choices, cortisone injections, pain killers, GF and dairy free diets, etc.

The option to have an ankle replacement is both exciting and terrifying. After two years of waiting, scans, xrays, meetings, blood tests, more scans, more tests, more meetings – finally it’s happening with the dear NHS. Next week.

The 3rd image is the little foreign creature that will replace my diseased ankle, which I comfort in these days before surgery. I am so sorry ankle, this will be a shock, but its time to go!
For those who are not sqeamish, here is a youtube link of what the surgeons will be doing. I will be in their very capable hands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX9jFs-sfOg

I am very much looking forward to being in
dialogue with Martin O’Brien at Somerset House Studios on December 6th, as part of day called Grounding Practice. We will be talking about our latest performances. “The Trembling Forest”, and “What the Serpent Told Me in the Misty Gloom”. We might discuss our different methods of making and performing, and explore themes of beginnings and endings/origins and after lives. Expect depth and lightness, telling of shared stories , different practices and new narratives…
