Devin Sao (@devography) moves between two worlds—one defined by urgency, the other by stillness. A first-generation Cambodian American raised in Florida and now based in Miami, he has spent 13 years as a Firefighter/Paramedic, building a life around service while quietly shaping another through photography.

Both paths, though different in pace, are rooted in the same instinct: to show up, to witness, to preserve what matters.

His journey into the fire service was shaped by legacy. The resilience of his parents—who rebuilt their lives after war—became a guiding force, while his older brother, also a firefighter, made the path feel real. That same influence extended beyond the job, helping shape his eye for photography, as well as his interests in cars and fashion.

Without a large Khmer community growing up, Sao’s connection to his culture lived at home—through food, language, and family. It’s a connection that has never left him, only deepened with time.

Now, after more than a decade behind the camera, he is working on his first photo book—an intimate reflection on first-generation Cambodian Americans. Through images and recipes inspired by his parents’ cooking, the project becomes more than documentation; it becomes preservation.

As he continues advancing in the fire service—currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Disaster Preparedness and Management—Sao remains grounded in both purpose and perspective.

In every sense, his life is about holding onto what matters, and making sure it isn’t forgotten.
