Not feeling the color lately. Also not feeling any AI or Unreal or anything that isn’t optical and in-camera. I am feeling @bastiaanwoudt and his spectacular B&W photography. Outstanding work. Go see at @jacksonfineart

This is a story of the indefatigable Ukrainian spirit and the heart of a hero in a little girl growing up in an orphanage. Orphanages proliferated in the years following the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe. On this day in 1996 when Lauri @laurifaggioni and I visited to interview some of the kids and caregivers we were told one girl in particular was waiting for us and had something to show us. In a dorm room lined with children’s beds stood our hero. She had one fully functioning arm but was quite capable with her other one. She proceeded to pull the sheets off every bed in the dorm and then with care, equanimity, and precision made every bed as we watched amazed and bewildered. At first I felt sad, then pity, but I eventually realized there was nothing to be sad about. This little girl was schooling me on courage and perseverance and self determination. She didn’t want my pity. She wanted our respect. Peace for Ukraine and respect for your desire for self determination.

In 1996 @laurifaggioni and I went to Ukraine on the tenth anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe to do a project on how people move on in the face of immeasurable loss and tragedy. While the devastation and consequences from the explosion at the nuclear power plant were overwhelming, the courage, gentleness, and strength of the Ukrainian people was inspiring. I can see their integrity and endurance today in the face of unbridled aggression and senseless violence. May peace return to Ukraine and the suffering cease.

I finished a new series of photographs just before COVID19 hit us. If you’re curious please check out Photo Series 2.0 on my site. Link in bio. It feels a little shameless promoting art during this time when so many people are experiencing fear and anxiety and confronting life and death situations, but maybe these shapes and colors can offer a respite from the gravity of these times. Wishing love and health to everyone.
