The Senate voted unanimously Thursday to withhold senators' pay during government shutdowns.

The resolution, introduced by Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., directs the Secretary of the Senate to hold back senators' salaries for the length of any future shutdown. Senators would still collect full back pay once shutdowns end. The measure applies only to senators, not House members, and takes effect after the 2026 midterms.

In response to the last two shutdowns, more than 150,000 people have signed a petition arguing Congress shouldn't get paid when over 1.5 million civilian federal employees can't.

"Fine me, I'm rich." A tourist was filmed throwing a large rock at an endangered Hawaiian monk seal in Maui last week, prompting a federal investigation.

Video shot by bystander Kaylee Schnitzer shows the man targeting Lani, a well-known seal near Lahaina. When confronted by a bystander, Schnitzer told reporters that he responded, “Fine me, I’m rich.” Lani is part of the local community, and Hawaiian monk seals are among the rarest marine mammals in the world, with only about 1,600 remaining in the wild. Authorities say the case is being reviewed under federal law, but no charges have been filed so far.

Now, a petition is urging prosecutors to pursue the strongest charges possible under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

This #NursesWeek, nearly 19,000 people have signed a petition urging Congress to pass the Save Healthcare Workers Act, which would make assaulting hospital staff a federal crime.

According to Nurse.org’s 2026 survey, 27% of nurses report being physically assaulted on the job in the past year, and 52% say they’ve faced verbal threats or aggression.

A 16-year-old nonverbal student with autism died on April 29, six days after a behavioral specialist at his Texas school pushed him to the ground.

Investigators say surveillance footage shows staffer Donald Perkins forcefully shoved the student from behind as they entered a classroom at a specialized pre-vocational school for students with disabilities. The student fell chest-down onto the tile floor. He was able to sit up, but within 90 seconds, staff could be heard saying he was choking. Perkins attempted the Heimlich maneuver but was unsuccessful.

The student was airlifted to a hospital and died days later. Court records say Perkins knew the student had food in his mouth and a history of choking. He has been charged with injury to a disabled person, released on $30,000 bail pending his court date, and placed on administrative leave.

A petition is calling for stronger charges, arguing that the current charge is not enough.

Abdul Saleh was a husband, father, and a beloved New York City deli worker in the East Village. He was fatally shot outside his family-run store on April 25. According to news reports, the person responsible had repeatedly threatened workers at that store before the shooting.
