Posting writing to main…This piece was supposed to be in a magazine but it got decommissioned this morning, a few months after being accepted for publication (and designed by me obviously) because it’s too internet-y. Ok…I’d say mostly it’s about my sweet landlord’s suicide earlier this year and the feelings that entwine us to darker winter months. I do feel more attentive to the process of creation during that season and gaze toward the universalizing blanket that billows above the city. Enjoy or don’t, it doesn’t matter to me.

Pierce delivers visceral, erotic poems that draw their raw materials from the folly of youth and the intoxication of first love. Grotesque imagery, calling back to the original sad girl poets, contrasts with erotic self-portraits. She presents the familiar ache of trying to define one’s self within the constraints of womanhood under the oppressive shadow of the patriarchy. Trauma is the catalyst for the reclamation of the “female gaze.”

“My ovaries shrink like a cranberry, drying up / like a snail / I will only have sex with myself for the rest of our lives.”

Peppered with riot girl hot takes, this intoxicating collection tackles issues of abortion, gender identity, and sexual agency. A promising debut that embraces dark femininity with a youthful battle cry full of fire and blood. 🩸

Emma Pierce is a poet and educator from a small town in Alabama. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Colorado Boulder and currently teaches English and creative writing. Her work seeks to create moments of recognition, connection, and quiet understanding—she now writes and teaches in between the mountains of Colorado.
