In 1933 the legendary father-son musicologist team, John and Alan Lomax, created some of the first field recordings inside American prisons and work camps. They were white guys recording work songs and spirituals with incarcerated black men and women. The recordings went on to influence pop music all over the world. Needless to say, it was fragile ethical territory. On one hand they were able to document what is arguably the most beautiful and important music in American history. On the other hand they’d played a part in the tragic story of appropriating black culture.

@huffmanstudio humbly made the effort of creating a film about some of the Lomax recording sessions. It’s set amongst this sketchy moral transaction between the Lomaxes and prisoners. If anything, it celebrates the wisdom and humanity in this music. We can not wait to share this with the world. For now, all we’ve got is some BTS magic. COVID compliant to a T.
