Afrospace Wednesdays at @oldplatesrecordbar have grown from a tiny weekly gig into a joyful celebration of South African Jazz. The 7-piece band features legendary drummer Brian Abrahams (Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Abdullah Ibrahim, Dewey Redman, Dudu Pukwana and more) and their 3-year ongoing residency has built up a cult following as one of Melbourne’s best feel good gigs.

The residency celebrates its third birthday this Wed 20 May, but Brian and the band will still be going strong every Wednesday into the future.

Donation entry, two sets of South African jazz from 8-10:30pm, West African food available and Brunswick Street’s best beer garden out the back.

We’re teaming up with @smallspacemusic and @alex.keatley to put on ‘Space Is The Place’ - a celebration of Brian Abrahams, South African jazz and large ensemble improvisation. Brian will be teaming up with fellow drummer Ronny Farella to lead a large ensemble, inspired by Brian’s time with the @grandunionorchestra . For the opening act, @alex.keatley brings his Sounds of The Motherland project to perform a mix of Alex’s original music and classics from his South African heritage, as featured in his recently released debut album.

Melbourne is home to a thriving outpost of South African jazz. Legendary drummer Brian Abrahams leads 7-piece Afrospace Interchange for a donation-entry gig every Wed at @oldplatesrecordbar (Brunswick Street, Fitzroy). Two sets from 8pm with a featured guest artist each week (upcoming guests include Angela Davis, Jorik Bergman (NED) and Scott Tinkler).

Afrospace Interchange are also heading to @geelongjazzandbluesfestival , playing at @beavsbar from 3:30pm on Sun 15 Mar.

Finally, on the afternoon of Sat 21 March, @alex.keatley (NZ) puts together a new band celebrating his South African roots, in a double bill with ‘Space Is The Place’, a large ensemble spiritual jazz collaboration featuring two drummers, @smallspacemusic (Ronny Farella) and Brian Abrahams.
