“For Psychic Liberation, the Berlin based trio BRAK unfurls their debut LP, “Friction”. After a succinct but distinct array of cassette releases and European tours, BRAK produces their most concentrated sonic statement yet for the vinyl record format. BRAK’s singular take on the psychedelically informed ethos of noise-rock enters the canon with dirgey power-blasts of delayed vocals, percussive angularity, and anxious spurts of scraping strings and feedback. The sonic cacophony that is conjured from the band is the underpinning of narratives with emotive tensions where glimpses into pressurized neurosis envelop “Friction”.
Berlin serves as a fruitful backdrop for BRAK’s viscous output. Pulling from punk, noise, no-wave, and tetrahydrocannabinol BRAK takes on aesthetic spheres of non linearity. Decisively a noise-rock band, “Friction” steamrolls at its own pace while never leaning into the downward spiral of “Punk” aesthetic tropes. In a cultural and social climate reliant on rules and adherence to standards of practice, Brak stands totemic and atomic.
