We are unimaginably heartbroken by the unexpected passing of our beloved friend, Jason "Shades" Schusterbauer who died in a car accident on September 22nd. To say that he was an employee of BookPeople, a legendary bookseller, and our one-man master of bargain, is true but not even close to describing his place in our store. For many of us, he was the first face we saw when walking through the doors in the morning, and if you have ever shopped with us on weekday mornings, you’ve been lucky enough to receive his friendly greeting from the information desk, or “grinfo” as we call it, after Shades’ insistence that “these kids just don’t know how to greet people anymore.”
Our community knows him not only through the incredible work he’s done building the most stellar bargain section of all time, but also as a frequent participant in our goofiest (and informational!) socials. For just the smallest glimpse into the abundant joy that Shades brought to us on a daily basis, see our pinned posts.
Shades had impeccable taste, for both himself and our customers, and passionately loved to share books with people. He radiated kindness and integrity. He made silly overhead pages over the loudspeakers, sold us girl scout cookies, enjoyed live music and traveling, and made us laugh so very much. He is forever in our hearts and we are going to deeply miss him. ❤️

Happy MARGO'S GOT MONEY TROUBLES finale day to all who celebrate!👻👽🤼
We've put together this starter pack for those who loved the book and/or the show and want to dive deeper into its themes and topics of motherhood, sex work, creative writing, and, of course, the storytelling and aesthetics of pro wrestling. What would you add to our list?
P.S. if you haven't read the book yet, our bookseller Helena HIGHLY recommends it—get your copy in-store or at the 🔗link in our bio!
If there is one takeaway I have of my grandma’s WWII Gulag survival story, it’s this: humanity prevails. It always wins. It’s what saves us from imploding ourselves into the abyss.
In an era when so much wants to divide us, feed our fears and turn against each other, why not do something different by living with more humanity?
The alternative hasn’t quite been working, so why not give humanity more of a chance? Who’s with me?
To understand more of how a little girl’s survival in sub-human conditions can spark inspiration for more humanity in this world, pick up A Polish Girl in Siberia. Available @bookpeople. If you’re in Austin, you might just get a signed copy from yours truly!
For more info, give me a follow @iza_skrypizas and check out my link in bio 🫶🏻
